Letter from Robert Day, judge, Loughlinstown House, Cabinteely, County Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, expressing support for the claims of Francis Spring upon government for services rendered in the past. Encloses letter from Spring, lieutenant, Milltown Yeomanry Corps, Milltown, County Kerry, recalling his decline of a £50 reward for apprehension of a number of Whiteboys in County Kerry; also mentions other action taken in support of law and order including the arrest of alleged murderer ‘Larkin’ and apprehension of ‘Lane' who was convicted in connection with abducting a female called ‘Fitzgerald’. Also encloses letter from Reverend Frederick Mullins, magistrate, Burnham House, County Kerry, to Spring, endorsing his application for payment of remuneration for services rendered in opposition to political disaffection. Also damp press copy letter from Gregory to Mullins, Beaufort, Killarney, conveying a communication has been presented to the Lord Lieutenant noting Spring’s refusal to accept compensation of £50. Petition of John Houlahan, Tarbert, County Kerry, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting appointment to the situation of constable or sub constable in the police establishment of Ireland. He alludes to his present poverty and fear of assassination due to support for crown prosecutions. Encloses certificate in support of application, signed by Colonel James Crosbie, MP for County Kerry, and 5 other magistrates and gentlemen. Also letter from Houlahan to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, acknowledging reply to application and reiterating plea for a situation since his £20 allowance from government is transferred to his aged parents ‘for their support in their declining years’; also indicates acceptance of free passage to North America. Letter from A [?Maher], Whitehall Place, London, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing an extract from minutes of commissioners entrusted with oversight of harbours of Howth, County Dublin, and Holyhead, Wales, indicating approval of recommendations for particular reductions in official positions and operations at these locations. Also encloses report from committee appointed by the commissioners stipulating the post of secretary at Howth harbour and that of messenger to the secretary is to be discontinued and the harbour master to be placed on the same salary footing as his counterpart in Holyhead; also observes that services of a treasurer at Holyhead are not essential and anticipates that overall savings arising from full recommendations will be region of ‘£670 and ultimately of about £1000 a year’. |
