Letter from magistrate George Lloyd, Mount Catherine, [Clonlara, County Clare, post town is Castleconnell, County Limerick], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, outlining his role in the preservation of the peace during the expected visit of Daniel O'Connell [MP for County Clare] to Killaloe on 28 July 1829, stating that Capt Goldfrap of the 60th Rifles stationed there and the parish priest Rev Daniel Vaughan were anxious as ‘the towns people shewed every inclination by threats and otherwise to disturb the peace, threatening to break the windows of all those who did not decorate their houses with Green flags and Branches of trees.’ Recommends that the licences be withdrawn from publicans Peter Nihil and Patrick Darcy, who ‘were most forward in wearing badges and having flags’, and using offensive language. |
