Letter from Reverend Edward Hackett, Church of Ireland rector, parish of Gale [Gaile], County Tipperary, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting a measure of relief from government due to his inability to collect tithes. Complains of his intransigent parishioners and remarks ‘I am well assured that Captain Rock’s system of Tithes is a system of persecution ag[ain]st the Clergy and the Tithes’. Encloses memorial to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, seeking advance of loan of £50 to alleviate immediate distress because of inability to gather tithe arrears. He complains his family were 'obliged to sell every thing saleable in their possession and live with the greatest frugality’. Recollects last year he employed ‘viewers, valuers or surveyors to value and make a fair return and Estimate of the parish, the Country people assaulted them in a most inhumane manner and left 2 of them almost dead with the blows they received having first taken from them the Books of the valuation of the tithes’. |

Petition of Joshua Free, member of Honourable Society of Kings and Grays Inns, Dublin, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, advancing claim for compensation on behalf of his mother, Susanna Free, who held a post with the House of Industry, Dublin, but has received an allowance of just £35 per year rather than the expected pension ‘of upwards of one Hundred Pounds per annum’; claims that on account of that disappointment in income he has been unable to establish a career as barrister. Also letter from Susanna Free to John Taylor, clerk, Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, explaining she will accept a monetary sum from government in exchange for a pension, money that will be used to strengthen the establishment of a school for ‘young Gentlemen’ boarders. Encloses letter from Mr Byrne, Byrne’s Hill, Dublin, to Joshua Free, Aungier Street, Dublin, expressing appreciation at the quality of tuition given to two boys and remarking he would not have discontinued their engagement ‘had your health permitted you to attend them’. |
