Petition of Morgan Larner, seaman, Galway, County Galway, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, seeking appointment to a situation in the custom house of the city of Galway. Refers to an earlier career in the Royal Navy which included action as a gunner on the ship ‘Duke of Montrose’ [East India Company], as well as a period spent at Bengal and Madras. Complains of an inadequate pension and laments that he ‘thro many unforesent [sic] accidents and a broken down Constitution has been reduced to the lowest Ebb’.

Claims to have served in the military for more than 10 years and was discharged ‘after having received several wounds’.

Seeks assistance from government in resolving impasse over validity of his title deed which has been objected to by the law adviser of the trustees of the Consolidated Fund.

Claims to have served in the military for some 30 years and was discharged with a small pension, which he laments, is ‘totally insufficient to support his family’. Also certificate from J Irwin, colonel, Sligo Militia, confirming character and fitness of Clarke for a position in the police.

Claims to have been ‘brought up in, and apprenticed out of the Royal Hibernian Military School’, Phoenix Park, Dublin, but due to a condition effecting his eyesight was unable to learn a trade.

Petition of Mary Sullivan, widow, Castletownsend [Castletownshend], near Skibbereen, County Cork, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting advance of a pension to support herself and her ‘three helpless orphans’. Recalls her late husband, James Sullivan, served as boatman with the preventive water guard at Donaghadee, County Down, and while labouring there ‘he and the Boats crew were unfortunately drowned on the Copeland Island on the 7th of Feb[rua]ry last’; also mentions he worked as seaman on the revenue vessels ‘Minerva’ and ‘Kite’ for almost 19 years but failed to qualify for a pension, which requires 21 years service.

Letter from Reverend Thomas Romney Robinson, [Director of Armagh Observatory], Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, expressing appreciation for exemption contained in the ‘Residence Bill’ and remarking ‘I was confident that the cause of science would not fail of protection from you’. Draws attention to typographical error in text of bill in which he is designated professor of anatomy rather than professor of astronomy at Armagh, and is concerned to learn how the mistake ‘will affect me’.
