SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Walter Molony, Chief Constable, Gort, [County Galway], to Maj Warburton, reporting on large nightly gatherings of men at [Killanena, County Clare] and unsuccessful attempts by a party of constables lead by Sgt Teaffy to arrest a man named Russel upon evidence of his whereabouts by a man called Neilson. Also letter from Joseph Tabuteau, Chief Constable, Ennis, [County Clare], to Warburton, reporting on the waylaying of a water guard at Moocen on this return from Seafield and the unsuccessful attempts by Sgt Cotter to apprehend those responsible. Also letter from Thomas Williams, Chief Constable, Woodford, [County Galway], to Warburton, reporting that bonfires were lit and hundreds of people paraded at night in celebration of O’Connell’s election victory; adding that the house of Lieut Sandwith, protestant, was attacked and that Rev Huleatt was obliged to call out the police from Whitegate and Mountshannon to protect him while conducting a funeral. Also draft order from Warburton, to his chief constables, ordering the constabulary to abstain from any demonstrations of political partiality or outbursts of temper and to only act under the direction of their magistrates following the recent events in London. Letter from John McDonald, Chief Constable, Loughrea, [County Galway], to Maj Warburton, reporting that following a request from Mr Darcy, magistrate, he and his men attempted to intervene in a riot at Loughrea Fair which resulted in his men being stoned; adding that a catholic priest managed to disperse some of the mob and that the military was also called out by the magistrate; reporting that two of his constables were attacked while carrying dispatches near Benmore. Also covering letter from George Warburton, Inspector General, Castlegar, [County Galway], to William Gregory, Under Secretary. Includes annotation from J Byng stating that McDonald’s account differs to the military report given by Capt Baker.

Letter from John Browne, Chief Constable [of the barony of Athlone], Tully House, [County Roscommon], to Maj Warburton, reporting that a sexton’s wife was attacked by a gang of men at the church of Moore, who in turn stole a pistol belonging to Rev Anderson; adding that a servant girl raised the alarm but that none of the patrons at a local public house made the ‘smallest effort’ to intervene. Copy of letter from DT Winslow, Chief Constable, Mohill, [County Leitrim], to Maj Warburton, noting that a party of 40 Rockites posted a notice at Anavagh Bridge warning Mr Hopkins, surveyor not to survey certain lands; adding that a party of men attempted to abduct a farmer’s daughter in order to force her to marry a man called Dolan but adding that she cannot be prevailed upon to prosecute. Copy of letter from Fergus Ferrall, Chief Constable, Swineford, [County Mayo], to Maj Warburton, transcribing a threatening notice sent to Patrick Short, a pensioner of the 6th Dragoon Guards and other pensioners. Letter from W Waldren, Newtown Forbes, [Newtownforbes, County Longford], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, reporting on the arrest of some of those accused of murder resulting from a riot between Orangemen and country people at Galshagh [Gelsha], Ballinalee, [County Longford]; noting that those who surrendered themselves are called Edward Burrows, Arthur and Robert Cathcart, John Morrisson, Michael Vance and James Wilson and observing that the accused will be ‘powerfully protected, and most ably defended’; adding that he has written to Maj O’Donoghue on the matter and seeking legal advice. Includes legal opinion of Richard W Greene and Henry Joy, Attorney General, stating that an end should be made to magistrates seeking legal opinions on cases like this.

Noting that Maher’s life is now in danger and that he wishes to move his family to Van Diemen’s Land [Tasmania].

Extract from letter from Capt Atkinson, Chief Constable, Strokestown, [County Roscommon], reporting on attacks on the houses of Murray, Sweeny and E Murray of [Clonfinlough] parish by a gang searching for guns. Also extract from reports from DJ Winslow and Mr Fortescue, chief constables, concerning threatening Rockite notices posted against Thomas Perceval and anyone providing information on the theft of arms at Clonbrony. Also extracts from letters from Mr Brown, Chief Constable, Tully, [County Roscommon], reporting on an attack on the house of Mathew Kelly of Toaghmaconnell parish who was ordered to quit his holding; also reporting on similar attacks against P Ward of Moone parish, C Dolan of Ballydangan, B Curley, T Naughten of Drum parish, Owen Lynch of Moone and Luke Drew, a wood-ranger of Richard Saint George. Includes memorandum from William Gregory, Under Secretary, noting the scarcity of magistrates in that part of Roscommon which borders County Galway.
