Four letters from Thomas Alleyn, [grocer], Templemore, [County Tipperary], to William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle], asking for a post as chief constable, and expressing fear for his life because of having given information on illicitly ground malt at several mills, and on illicit stills, to Mr Miller, Collector, Clonmel, and Mr Hillman, Revenue Officer, who have acted accordingly, enclosing supporting letters from [his relative] Cap George Bradshaw, Tipperary, and from John Lloyd, Carrickfergus, [County Antrim], and further mentioning his brother Samuel Alleyn, attorney, his uncle Samuel Alleyn, magistrate, his landlords Mrs [Hant] and Thomas Millett, and more incidentally also mentioning Mr M Purefoy, Greenfield, Mr Lanigan, attorney, the Misses Bradshaw, his brother in law Hugh Brady Bradshaw, Michael Hogan, and William Quinlan, former public house keeper. Also includes damp press copy letter from Gregory, and notes stating that Alleyn must contact the Excise Board directly, and discouraging hope for the police situation he asks for. |

SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Correspondence partly regarding the Irish Jesuits, partly with information from among republican carpenters in Dublin. Includes letter from JW Armstrong, magistrate, Ballycumber, Clara, [County Offaly], to ‘Sir’ [William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle], reporting on suspicious movements observed around the Jesuit College [St Stanislaus’s College] in Rahan, [near Tullabeg, County Offaly], where ‘since the affair in France’ a number of Jesuits have arrived and certain numbers have been coming and going during the night. Also includes two letters from a [government agent?], near Clongows [Clongowes Wood] College, [County Kildare], to [government], with information from a Clongowes gatekeeper named Delany, that the Jesuits have ‘no conception that the Bill passed last session of Parliament can be brought to effect…however they discontinued preaching their violent sermons on controversy since the passing of that act’; recommending that government approached the Catholic bishops to prevent priests from meddling with politics, reminding people in their sermons of ‘imaginary wrongs under which they labour’. Also reporting from among Dublin carpenters, naming one of them as [Jourden], a violent republican from County Down in the employ of Hamilton [Revers?], stating that they perceive the repeal only as a pretext and want a complete separation. |
