Memorial from John Burke, Gurtduff [Gortduff], County Galway, to Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke Northumberland, [Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Dublin], complaining that while one magistrate, Richard Manseragh St George, Headford Castle, [County Galway], acquitted him of an accusation of having cut twigs on John Kerwin [Kirwan]’s demesne, Castlehackett, [County Galway], he was afterwards sentenced to a fine by John Burke, magistrate, asking for redress. Also, [copy or draft] letter from Dublin Castle to St George, asking for his opinion; a note asking whether William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle] would honour such a frivolous complaint.

Letter from Matthew Barrington, [crown solicitor], Cork, [County Cork], to William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle], reporting on the recent assizes, mentioning the execution of Patrick Duggan for the murder of Thomas Casey; the sentencing to death of Chales Daly for violating a child of nine years; the conviction of Jeremiah McCarthy for the murder of Honora Hennessy and the conviction of Timothy Canty for the murder of Hennessy’s husband; sentence of death for Jonathan Eaves, soldier, for the murder of Patrick Kelly in Canada. Stating that the county is quite peaceable.

File of reports about a large number of outrages in and around Bailieborough, County Cavan, and the government’s attempt to understand the underlying causes. Includes correspondence from Sergt John Hanlon, Bailieboro yeomanry and from John MacLeod, Sub-Inspector, Cavan, [County Cavan], to detailing the attack by a mob from Counties Louth an Monaghan on Rev Sargeant, bailiff and agent for Sir Robert Hudson’s estate, during an attempt to evict 70 families; also, from Brig Maj S Semple, Belturbet, [County Cavan], to William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle], with enclosures from John Donnelly, Bailieborough Castle, from and Capt JD Martin, Chief Constable, Rathcoole, [County Dublin], with extract of letter from his contact in County Cavan, John Martin, Tillylukin [?Tullylorcan], on a riot on Easter Monday with Martin stating that he never saw the county so disturbed but that papists are prevented from acting in daylight by the threat of Orangemen. Semple also encloses a letter from Lieut Edward Mahaffy, Bailieborough yeomanry, with details on three other outrages, including an attack on John Hunter’s house. Further, letters from Maj Thomas D’Arcy, Inspector General [for Ulster], Holly Hill, Strabane, [County Tyrone] to Gregory giving his opinions why Cavan is so disturbed, including the political ferment after the election which has never subsided and is always ready to break out into violence. A note by Gregory appears to lay blame at the deficiency of coroners and magistrates.

Letter from Randall Borough, magistrate, Cappa Lodge, Kilrush, [County Clare], to William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle], detailing the case of fourteen-year old John Enright who together with William Downy caused the death of the elderly Francis Brew; asking whether he may be bailed and offering insights into his family circumstances. Also, annotation by Richard W Greene, [legal advisor, Dublin], in the affirmative.

File of six letters from Maj William Miller [Inspector General], Fermoy, [County Cork], informing government of the murder of Darley Brennan, County Kerry, and the apprehension of perpetrators. Miller, writing to William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle], encloses reports by M Kirwan, Chief Constable, Kenmare, [County Kerry], detailing how Brennan was murdered by John Kelly and Bartholomew Palmer, with the latter turning informer, and how the murder was instigated by the deceased’s wife Bridget and her ‘paramour’ James Sullivan Oeneen the younger, as also her servant Mary Palmer, with Sullivan’s parents James Sullivan Oeneen the elder and Johanna Sullivan, and their son Daniel Sullivan Oeneen, acting as accessories. It is stated that early suspects were [Kerry] Shea and Timothy Shea, father and son; one of the investigating magistrates was Rev Denis Mahony. Half a year later, Kirwan also apprehends Jeremiah Sullivan [Randam] who may have been implicated in the murder, and it is revealed that Bridget Brennan and Sullivan Oeneen the younger suffered the death penalty.

Letter from William Bell, Sub-Sheriff, Cavan, County Cavan, to ‘Sir’ [Sir Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle], detailing two instances when a mob prevented the execution of warrants or writs; one involving a suit by John Carmichael against the goods of John Sheils, merchant, when the bailiffs were attacked, mentioning also Mr Ward, gentleman, and Mr McCann who gave the bailiffs shelter; the other involving a writ for Ward which Bell could not execute. Also includes annotation by Richard W Greene, [legal advisor, Dublin], naming both the posse comitat­us and the police as possible solutions for the sheriff.

Letter from Tomkins Brew, Chief Constable and magistrate, Corofin, [County Clare], to William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle], reporting about the state of the country where the mob attempts to keep down the price of potatoes and commits outrages by means of intimidation and coercion, mentioning that few are willing to give evidence, that a man was punished for contracting with Mr Lysaght of Ballykeal [Ballykeel, County Clare], that a man was forced to give his daughter and a dowry ‘to the greatest ruffian in the country’, that one principal perpetrator in the destruction of John Hynes’s boat is in gaol; also stating that the people suffer greatly with lack of employment and high food prices. Also, acknowledging receipt of payment for John Connor for his services.
