James Hogg, Gillstown, Strokestown, [County Roscommon], to Sir Francis Leveson Gower, [Chief Secretary], Dublin Castle, returning enclosed petition from Bryan [also Bernard] Gunty, Knockhall, [County Roscommon], complaining that magistrate James Hogg refused him bail, because Gunty had refused to clear Hogg’s son of murder, and Patrick Hogan and others had done. Hogg refutes this, mentioning Hagan is brother in law of Hogg, Denis and Owen Gunty his brothers, a bailiff named Feeny, and magistrate Conry. Also enclosing, for illustration, a copy letter from [Robert Ross] Achmuty, Kilmore, [County Roscommon], on an outrage against Patrick Quinn where Owen Gunty’s sons are implicated, and where Thomas Glancy and Bernard Beirne are also suspects. Further, enclosing affidavit by Patrick Hagan [Hogan], Kilglass, before Hogg and [M] McDermott, magistrates, charging Daniel Hanly, process server and Denis Gunty, labourer with an attack on him. |
