File of documents regarding the seizing of common lands at Lloyd, [County Meath] by local tenants claiming their shared right to them and thereby opposing the local corporation [of Kells, County Meath]. Includes letters from Lord Headfort [Thomas Taylour, 1st Marquess of Headfort], describing the seizure and justifying his and the other magistrates’ committal of six men to Trim Gaol, [County Meath], asking for legal advice; Maj Samson Carter, [magistrate], Kingscourt, [County Cavan], with advice on assemblies near Kilmainham Wood [County Meath], Robert Sargent, agent to Headfort, Eighter, [County Cavan], introducing bearer as witness William [Procter?], stating the tenantry is ‘perfectly organised’; also copy letters from [Archdeacon] Thomas Singleton, [private secretary to Hugh Percy, 3rd duke Northumberland, Dublin] and Sir Henry Hardinge, [1st Viscount Hardinge, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle], on the unpopularity of the police and the preference for using the military in cases of controverted rights. Headfort states that Catholic Rev McEvoy, curate of Kells, [County Meath], assisted Headfort in dispersing most people, before arrests were made; states that [] Tierney, shopkeeper is the people’s banker and has collected money for the prisoners’ defence.
