Includes correspondence from Maj William Miller [Inspector General], Fermoy, [County Cork] and [Mathew] Singleton, Sub-Inspector, Tralee, to Sir Henry Hardinge, [1st Viscount Hardinge, Chief Secretary, and William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle], on Singleton’s searches for arms as a result of Miller’s circulating a warning about the recent Arms Act, letters from Richard O’Connell, barrister, Tralee, enclosing letters and petition from Francis Healy, Tralee, and his sister in law Margaret Healy, widow of Philip Healy, claiming that a violent search carried out by Constable Samuel Huggard caused Philp Healy’s premature death and asking for an investigation. Also, letters from James Royse Yielding, ensign Kerry militia, Tralee, to G, pleading to return arms to Florence McCarthy and Patrick Lyne, and from James Crosbie, Ballyheigue Castle, [County Kerry], asking on behalf of fellow magistrates whether Singleton ought to investigate before removing or dismissing police constables. One letter from Singleton in his defence encloses another from John Burke, Chief Constable, Castlegregory, [County Kerry], with a list of nineteen men, mostly farmers and labourers, from whom arms were taken [to prove that illegal arms were generally not taken from gentlemen]. Eventually, Dublin Castle orders Singleton’s removal, meeting with counter arguments from Miller.
