Further, enclosing proceedings of an inquisition by Bernard Maguire, coroner, on Lawless’s murder, naming jury members, stating that Leery and an unknown person committed the act; with statements from witnesses Mathew Fleming, Edward Keary, Patrick Maher, Michael Keegan, Samuel A Duigan, James and Patrick Farrell; arranging for a reward to apprehend suspects. Includes correspondence from George Drought, [magistrate], and Joseph Goslett, Chief Clerk, Police Office, Limerick, to William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle], enclosing a copy of ‘The Limerick Evening Post and Clare Sentinel’ and providing Drought’s own reports; memorial signed by [] Harvey, Mayor of Limerick and chair, Directors of the Chamber of Commerce, Limerick, to Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke Northumberland, [Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Dublin], complaining that the police authorities did not act with sufficient force; also, further letters in Drought’s defence by Maj Gen Sir Edward Blakeney, JN Russell, flour merchant, Limerick, describing how Drought saved his sons Thompson and Richard Russell, and his mill, and letters enclosed by Blakeney from Augustus Coyle, his aide de camp, and [Assistant Deputy Master General Ward], Limerick. Moreover, includes printed handbills advertising Russell’s flour, and referring to a meeting of magistrates called to provide relief the day after the riot occurred. Naming other store keepers in town as [Tool] Gabbett, Hogan, Erson, Shea, and Caswell. A letter from [Thomas Philips] Vokes, [magistrate], Limerick, reports on a parallel riot on Erson’s mills, Askeaton, describing magistrate Mr Hunt’s efforts. |
