File of correspondence regarding an electioneering riot near Aglish, County Waterford, and the question of bailing the leader of the mob. Includes letters from [Beresford] Boate, magistrate, Dungarvan, [County Waterford], to William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle], enclosing affidavits from James Cuthbert, officer of excise, Dungarvan, and from three men whose carriage was stopped near Aglish, namely John Culbert, car driver, James Wallis, owner of the car, and Lieut Henry Frederick Hawker, 19th Regiment of Foot, all from Youghal, [County Cork], who accompanied by a Mr Jones were forced off their car by a mob led by Patrick Condon, carpenter, Aglish, suspected to be voting for Lord George Beresford’s men. Annotation by Richard W Greene, [legal advisor, Dublin], confirms that the offence is just a ‘misdemeanour’ and bailable. Also, letters from John [Matthew] Galwey, Duckspool, and Patrick Smith, magistrates, Dungarvan, pleading to give Condon bail. |

Letter from Arthur Crossley, magistrate, Elphin, [County Roscommon], to William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle], enclosing a letter from Roger Gilmartin, prisoner, Carrick on Shannon Gaol, [County Leitrim], to Martin Treacy, Dromahair, [County Leitrim], and John Gilmartin, Raghmoney, [Rathmoney, County Sligo], stating there are ‘numbers of our Society’ in that gaol, telling them to connect with John and William Kelly, and with [other members in] Ballintoher, [Ballintogher, County Sligo] about an effort to free them, threatening otherwise to turn King’s evidence, and referring to Thomas Currin regarding pistols. Crossely comments that other such letters were written to different persons in the country; that a woman smuggling a rope ladder into the gaol was apprehended; that military are expected from Boyle, [County Roscommon]. |
