Letters from [Du Pré Alexander, 2nd Earl of Caledon], Armagh, [County Armagh], and from [Irwin] Kelly, Sovereign of Armagh, to Sir Henry Hardinge, [1st Viscount Hardinge, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle], reporting on a riot in Armagh and a subsequent investigation by the magistrates finding that it resulted from a quarrel by soldiers of the 87th Regiment with a carman and resulted in several people wounded, including police; mentioning the assistant jailor, Thompson, and McMahon, a publican. Also, two copy replies from Hardinge, pointing to a likely withdrawal of the Regiment from Armagh.

Also, draft reply by Gregory encouraging them to use their own discretion, and letter from Sir John Harvey [Inspector General, Kilkenny, County Kilkenny], to Gregory, stating that he has made arrangements with McDOnnell and with Lieut Despard [Sub-Inspector] to increase the police force.

Two letters from John Blakeney junior, Coroner, Galway, [County Galway], to Sir Francis Leveson Gower, [Chief Secretary], Dublin Castle, reporting on the occurrence of a number of outrages, in particular the recent murder by unidentified men of Peter Barret on Cross Street [Galway]; an investigation has not been able to prove anybody guilty. Asking for assistance, and stating that a subscription has raised a reward of Stg£100. Also, annotation by [Gower] with the opinion that the local police must be inefficient although the Corporation appears to have abundant funds.

Correspondence regarding a recent Orange lodge procession in Ballyshannon, [County Donegal], opposed by two magistrates under fear of a riot. Includes correspondence from John Hamilton and Rev Edward M Hamilton, magistrates and clerk, Brown Hall, Ballintra, Ballyshannon, [County Donegal], to Sir Francis Leveson Gower, [Chief Secretary], Dublin Castle, enclosing depositions with the minutiae of the Orange procession on 1 January, asking whether to take examinations; also, letters from Maj Thomas D’Arcy, Inspector General [for Ulster], Holly Hill, Strabane, [County Tyrone], and Henry Ross Lewin, Chief Constable, Ballyshannon, suggesting that the two magistrates were easily frightened and stating that a large number of police was already stationed in the district; further, annotations by Richard W Greene, [legal advisor, Dublin] and copy replies by William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle], one of them stating that the offenders ought to be prosecuted and forwarding papers to the Attorney General. Unhappy with one government response, the Hamiltons resign their commissions of the peace. The depositions are by the Hamiltons, by Sergt Miller, Constable, David Kilpatrick, Alexander Eakins, and William Kerr, sub-constables, Ballyshannon, detailing how the magistrates read the riot act to participants of the march despite which it continued, but also showing that the Catholics who had planned to oppose it did not do so; listing participant Orangemen as James Crawford, master of a lodge outside of Ballyshannon, John Watson, drummer, [] McVitty, fife player, James [Calvin], Hugh Finch, William Morrow, John Dinsmore, W Thomson, Andrew McKinley.

Chaytor comments that she has now applied to release Callaghan on bail, wishing to marry him. Also, annotation by Richard W Greene, [legal advisor, Dublin], stating bail cannot be given, since this would implicate government in the crime.

Letter from Bartholomew Warburton, magistrate, Swanlinbar, [County Cavan], to William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle], returning enclosed memorial from John Baxter, dealer, Ballyconnell, County Cavan, to Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke Northumberland, [Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Dublin], complaining of a policeman who takes a tribute from other dealers, also stating that the County Leitrim police assist in taking tolls. Warburton reports on Baxter’s bad reputation, and found that Baxter was unwilling to swear evidence, also saying however, that he gave useful information on a robbery perpetrated against Mrs [Window?].
