File of documents regarding a riot at Clifden, [County Galway] when unidentified policemen killed John Conneely; with local magistrates asking advice from government. Includes correspondence from Thomas Martin and Rev Anthony Thomas, magistrates, Clifden, enclosing a statement and copy depositions which led them to reach the verdict that either William Veitch or James Feltus, Constables, caused Conneely’s death, and that Myles King, son of Con King, was guilty of inciting the riot. Also includes correspondence from Maj [George] Warburton, [Inspector General], Castlegar, [County Galway], enclosing letters from John D’Arcy, magistrate, and Cap Thomas B Ferman, Chief Constable, both Clifden, from which it appears that Ferman intended to protect the policemen who fired. Annotations by Richard W Greene, [legal advisor, Dublin], indicate to the magistrates that they ought to convict the guilty men, and that King’s offence is bailable. Further, letter from Edward Hickman, crown solicitor, 17 Middle Abbey Street, [Dublin], to Sir Henry Hardinge, [1st Viscount Hardinge, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle], enclosing receipts for expenses incurred in the defence of James Feltus and William Vietch, Constables for shooting John Conneely, signed Walter [Coness], and John [Beattie], witnesses, Thomas and James Blakeney, solicitors, and others.
