Includes letter from Henderson, 22 College Green, Dublin, to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, referring to his call for an investigation of the offence committed by Lieut James Crawford, late paymaster of the county; encloses copy affidavit from George Saunder, constable, stating the bedding was taken away by Crawford and ‘not replaced for years’, leaving the men to supply their own.Also includes letter from Lieut James Crawford, Tullamore, [Kings County or County Offaly], to Col Sir John Harvey, [inspector general of police for province of Leinster], Kilkenny, [County Kilkenny], refuting the allegation made by Saunder and asserting that the articles of furniture and bedding at Banagher belonged to James Grant and all at Cloghan belonged to the men, except a bed which was the property of the public. |

File of confidential reports concerning the state of poverty and collection of the O’Connell tribute in certain counties primarily in the south, west and midlands of Ireland. Includes reports on poverty and the O’Connell ‘rent’ from counties Carlow, Wexford, Wicklow, Westmeath, Queen’s County [County Laois], Meath, Kildare, Louth, Longford and Kerry [usually compiled and forwarded by the same chief constable of police]; also includes reports on poverty and local distress from counties Mayo, Kilkenny, Cork, Galway, Waterford, Tipperary and the city and county of Dublin. Includes resolutions from a meeting held in Belmullet, [County Mayo], chaired by Rev John Dawson, vicar of the Union of Kilmore Erris and Kilcommon, indicating in addition to a ‘loan fund’ being raises to alleviate local distress a ‘fund for gratuitous relief’ is being collected to address immediate want, singed by J Nugent, 8 January 1831. Also includes letter from Lieut James Battersby, Chief Constable of County Carlow, to Col John Harvey, Inspector General of police, indicating that no collection of the [Daniel] O’Connell tribute took place in his district on Sunday 9 January past; noting that Dr [James Warren] Doyle [Roman Catholic bishop of Kildare and Leighlin] has disallowed any collection for O’Connell on account of construction of a ‘magnificent Chapel building’ in the town of Carlow, 25 January 1831. Also includes letter from Maj William Miller, [Inspector General of Police in Munster], Fermoy, [County Cork], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, reflecting on the availability of provisions in the south, their price and distribution; noting some scarcity in parts of Cork and Kerry and referring to various reports transmitted to his office on the issue, 28 January 1831. Also includes cover letter from Maj George Warburton, chief police magistrate, enclosing detailed returns on the state of provisions in the province of Connaught: covering counties Leitrim, Clare, Sligo, Roscommon, Mayo and Galway, 17 February 1831. |
