Letter from Joseph Andrew MacDonell [MacDonnell], Newgate Gaol, [Dublin], to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, complaining of maltreatment and calling for the arrest of Daniel O’Connell MP, Thomas Steele and others following his expulsion from a repeal dinner; requesting release from prison where he is held for failing to keep the peace; claiming to have acted to secure the arrest of Col Plunkett, a rebel in the 1798 Rebellion, and mentioning a number of near relation, who are both Roman Catholic and loyal, in counties Dublin, Meath, Kildare, Kerry and Mayo [his home county], many of whom are justices of the peace; adding he is a devout Catholic and ‘advocate for “Repeal of the Union”’. |

Letter from William Morris, 183 North King Street, [Dublin], to [the Chief Secretary’s Office], requesting to learn if he should cancel a public lecture on the subject of Irish patronage in manufacturing in Ireland, because of the danger that a ‘free discussion’ afterwards might deviate to a debate on matters of a political nature; should the government advise against the lecture, he appeals for a degree of financial support for a publication. Encloses printed prospectus for the first lecture on practical patriotism to be held in the Royal Exchange Coffee Room, on 14 January 1831. Also draft reply from Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley, Chief Secretary, to Morris, emphasising it is not the government’s wish to interfere with normal public discussion except in those cases where the meeting is sabotaged by those with subversive motives. |

Encloses letter from Maj Gen Sir Thomas Arbuthnot, assistant adjutant general, Athlone, [County Westmeath], to the Royal Hospital, indicating that as a breach in the prison wall at Sligo has been repaired, there is no longer a need for a military guard.Also encloses letter from W Colquhoun, captain, 83rd Regiment, Sligo, to Arbuthnot, reporting that in consequence of a repair to the gaol wall the sentry is no longer required. |

Petition of Matthew McDermott, late colour sergeant, 31st Regiment of Foot, Strokestown, [County Roscommon], to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, seeking assistance of government in apprehending a couple of reprobates who stole a selection of firearms from his dwelling; stating thatwhile in attendance at a meeting of the masonic lodge in Strokestown, his house was attacked and blundered by a party of Rockites, who took weapons, cash and personal effects, and also assaulted his wife and son; claiming also special treatment as out pensioner of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, London, with an ‘amputated right thigh’ following a military campaign in France.
