File of documents concerning an application from the magistrates of County Donegal for a military force to establish order in the barony of Kilmacrenan. Includes letter from Sir Edmund Samuel Hayes [3rd baronet], Drumboe Castle, [County Donegal], to Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley, Chief Secretary, calling attention to the need for a suitable military presence in the county to curtail lawlessness and illegal assemblies pressing for a repeal of the union. Encloses copy of resolutions of the magistrates of County Donegal approving an application to the Lord Lieutenant for ‘a Strong Military Detachment’ to be quartered in the towns of Letterkenny, Rathmelton and Dunfanaghy. Also includes resolutions from the magistrates expressing their disapproval at instances of unruliness, at unlawful assembles, at ‘the collection of unlawful Rates or Taxes’, and at the activities of combinations; stressing their determination to seize illegally held weapons, to protect church tithes and landed property, signed by 21 individuals.
