Letter from John Wright, Chief Constable, Ballinamore, [County Leitrim], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, drawing attention to a copy of a letter addressed to [Maj] George Warburton, Inspector General of Police [in Connaught], on the subject of the killing of an attacker by Edward Rosman; explaining that Rosman’s father’s house at [Edentenny] came under attack by a party of disaffected and observing that his father [Bennett Rosman] is a yeoman and the incident is likely to spark ‘the most serious consequences’; remarking that the police were detained at the fair of Drumsna so were unable to lend any assistance during the attack; adding that a full investigation will take place and observing that Edward Rosman has absconded. |

Letter from Capt Bartholomew Warburton, police magistrate, Ballinasloe, [County Galway], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, asking for the guidance of the law officers of the crown on how to proceed with a number of suspects now incarcerated in gaol on the strength of information received from Hugh Gatley; enclosing affidavit of Gatley, ploughman and caretaker for Grenville Ffrench, Claremont, County Roscommon, stating that he was subjected to intimidation by a number of persons on the banks of the River Suck, some of whom were bearing arms; remarking also on a second meeting with certain disaffected persons on his employer’s property who had the object of having wages raised; also noting another meeting with the disaffected on the road and being obliged to subscribe 1s 6d for the purchase of ‘[gun] powder and shot’; also affidavit of Michael Ellis, steward and agent to Ffrench, stating he found a threatening Rockite notice attached to one of the gates at Claremont; adding the notice dealt with the subject of wage regulation and stipulated that farm labourers must be local men. |

Letter from [Maj] George Warburton, Inspector General of Police [in Connaught], Ballinasloe, [County Galway], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, enclosing letter from [James O’Connor], Chief Constable, Tuam, County Galway, reporting that Mark Waldron and Anne Waldron of Cloonarkin, near Tuam, have ‘no right whatsoever’ to a property which they contest with John and Jeremiah Byrne and others; observing that Waldron imposed on the Widow [Mary] Mannion’s generosity and has engaged in various legal actions to take the land by force. Also petition of Mark and Anne Waldron, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, seeking legal assistance from the crown solicitor to retrieve the property in question from John and Jeremiah Byrne and their wives; also affidavit from the Waldron affirming the truth of the petition; sworn before John Egan, magistrate. |
