Letter from [Maj] George Warburton, Inspector General of Police [in Connaught], Ballinasloe, [County Galway], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, enclosing letter from John Brown, Sub-Inspector, Carrick on Shannon, [County Leitrim], reporting on peace keeping efforts by the police at the fair of Drumsna; stating that two large groupings were assembled in the neighbourhood with an intention of having a faction fight ‘to decide by brute force’ whom is the stronger; noting that a company of dragoons from County Longford also helped ensure that an affray did not take place; also copy of requisition by Francis O’Beirne, high sheriff and three other magistrates, requesting that Brown deploy a sufficient force of police at Drumsna on the morning of Tuesday 13thof December. Includes letter from John Wright, Chief Constable, Ballinamore, to [Maj] George Warburton, Inspector General of Police [in Connaught], detailing the subversive activities that have occurred on account of the killing of Hugh Reynolds by Edward Rosman during a defence of his father’s property at Edentenny; remarking upon the conduct of local Rockites who have posted threatening notices and have used intimidation to curtail purchases of goods in Protestant shops; explaining that tensions are especially high in the district around Edentenny and remarking the lower orders have made diligent search of the immediate area in a bid to discover the whereabouts of Rosman; also transcribing two threatening notices warning Charles Gerard to discharge his servant James Magill and warning local people against dealing in Protestant shops on pain of death.
