Includes letter from [Mathew] Singleton, Sub-Inspector, Tralee, County Kerry, to Maj William Miller, [Inspector General of Police in Munster], Fermoy, [County Cork], reporting that as many as 3000 sovereigns have been exchanged for notes in the town of Tralee over the past couple of days; noting the behaviour has brought about stagnation in the markets; stating that he has drawn up a statement in opposition to the actions of the public which has been presented to the provost. Includes letter from Tomkins Brew, Chief Magistrate, Adelphi, Corofin, [County Clare], to Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley, Chief Secretary, reporting on the murder of Blood; stating the crime was committed in the ‘most horrid manner in his own back yard’ and observing that having killed the magistrate, the mob plundered his house of money and arms; adding he received the news on foot of an investigation on the previous night of the abduction of a girl by a ‘ruffian’ named Donaghan. Also includes copy letter from Brew to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, stating that all of the gang responsible for Blood’s murder are apprehended except Michael Hogan; discussing the reward raised for information and stressing the need to remove the suspicion held by the country people that such incentives are merely ‘paper rewards’. Returning a copy affidavit of Sgt William Kerr, claiming that large number of persons are seeking to gain increased wages through intimidation; noting that a mob gathered in the parish of Termonfeckin with ‘large clubs’ and they put a stop to several men engaged in ploughing; stating the mob was headed by Patrick Gartlang and several others; sworn before Wallop Brabazon of Rath. Includes letter from Rev Edward Barton, Archdeacon of Ferns and Rector of Adamstown, 124 Baggot Street, [Dublin], to Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley, Chief Secretary, relaying details of a concerted campaign of intimidation against the collection of tithes in his parish of Adamstown; observing that his agent was threatened and the tithe proctor’s house visited by a party of men ‘dressed in woman’s clothes’; adding that a ‘hurling’ meeting was organised which acted as a platform for making anti-tithe sentiments.
