Letter from Thomas Brereton, magistrate, Rathurles, Nenagh, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, complaining that Mr Pepper, Chief Constable, has withdrawn a party of constables which were ordered by magistrates to guard his haggard of corn from an arson attack; claiming that the attacks are in retaliation to arrests and prosecutions. Also letter from [Theobald] Pepper, Nenagh, probably to W Miller, Inspector General, explaining that he was forced to remove the guard due to the reduction of the peace preservation force and a lack of men. Also letter from Miller, Clonmel, [County Tipperary], to Gower, noting that Brereton has ignored advice that he quickly thresh and sell his corn. Letter from Samuel L Montgomery, Moville, [County Donegal], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, submitting lengthy copies of correspondence which he had with the Commissioners of Irish Fisheries soliciting funding for the construction of a pier at Craigbuoy, [County Donegal] and concluding that ‘these Gentlemen as Trustees of a National fund have not come to a fair conclusion of a claim preferred by me’. Also letter from H Townsend, Irish Fishery Office, [Dublin], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, stating that the commissioners have received 17 applications for piers and that due to limited funds they were not in a position to fund a pier at Craigbuoy; adding that Montgomery was not prepared to provide £200 towards the works and that a pier has been constructed at the nearby fishing village of Greencastle at the mouth of Lough Foyle. Also letter from Montgomery, to Gower, claiming that the commissioners failed to take into account the amount of money he had already expended on the project. |

File of letters from Michael Creagh, High Sheriff of County Cork, Kilbrack, Doneraile, [County Cork], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, outlining his increasing difficulty in concluding the election of a new coroner of the county due to the multitude of individuals claiming a right to vote as freeholders. Noting that the election was called after the death of Mr Dalton and is between Mr [Jones] and Mr [Connellan]. Explaining the defects in the law and observing that, despite having disenfranchised a vast number, nearly 10000 men have been polled in an election that has lasted a number of months. Enclosing lists of names of 42 individuals who held common land on mountains paying no rent, rates or taxes and who have presented themselves to vote claiming that ‘the most High God was their Landlord’. Noting that other individuals claimed to be recent tenants of Rev McNamara, a priest. Seeking permission to adjourn the election as suggested by the Recorder of Cork.
