Annotations on reverse giving legal opinion of Richard W Greene, stating ‘this act does not extend to Ireland. It was passed in England, to enable discharged Soldiers to exercise Trades… There is nothing in Ireland to prevent such persons from carrying on Trades, and therefore I see no objection to the Memorialist’s engaging in any business he thinks fit’. |

File of papers relating to complaint by Surgeon William MacLean [also referred to as McLean] of Killybegs and Ardara Dispensary, Bellville, [County Donegal], against Chief Constable John Wright for withholding payment for his medical attendance to members of the constabulary and their families. Includes letter from MacLean to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, outlining his complaint against Wright. Also letter from Wright, Milltown Malbay, [County Clare], to Lamb, 21 December 1827, contesting MacLean’s allegations, and referring to 2 enclosed numbered documents, namely: no 1 copy of letter from MacLean to Wright, dated 8 August 1827, claiming payment for medical attendance to the police of the Barony of Bannagh; and no 2 copy of certificates indicating that Wright and his policemen were exclusively subscribed to the Mountcharles Dispensary, and not to Wright’s dispensary. Indicates he also previously served as assistant surgeon in the 88th Regiment of Foot. Additional letter from MacLean to Lamb, requesting a reply. Also draft copy of reply from the Chief Secretary's Office to Wright, in reference to his letter of 21 November. |

Letter from Maj William Reid, Captain of the Royal Engineers [and superintendent for Lt Col Thomas Frederick Colby, Director of Ordnance Survey in Ireland], Survey Office, Phoenix Park, [Dublin], to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, informing him that a pole erected ‘at considerable expense’ on Kippure Mountain, County Wicklow, for the purposes of the Ordnance Survey of Ireland, has been taken down, and an investigation is underway by the Inspector General of Police to discover those responsible. Also states ‘the inhabitants of this mountain being all Roman Catholic I have written to the Parish Priests’. Printed copy of notice issued by him on 30 November 1827 annexed to letter with wax seal.
