Enclosing a letter from Nangle, chief constable of police, Midleton, County Cork, to Miller, drawing attention to the public display of handbills or notices on the issue of tithes; noting the items were put on display in the towns and villages of his district sometime during the night for reasons of secrecy; adding he removed two printed posters from the market house of Midleton, one with heading ‘To Farmers Tithe and [church]-Rate Payers’ and another advertising a number of [anti-tithe] publications being offered by Ferguson’s printers of108 St Patrick Street, Cork [both present]. |

Enclosing copy of request from the magistrates at Dunshaughlin, signed by six members of the bench, and also report from Lieut George Despard, sub-inspector of police, Trim, stating the proposal is ‘a very desirable measure’ but warning that it would not be easily accomplished in view of the current regulations. Also enclosing a table showing the total number of policemen in the Dunshaughlin district, demarcating the number of constables and sub-constables, together with the total number. |

Letter from Maj William Miller, [Inspector General of Police in Munster], Fermoy, [County Cork], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, reporting on an application for promotion from Constable William Dann of the police constabulary of County Limerick; insisting that no policemen from the lower ranks has been promoting to the higher one during his term of office but acknowledging the virtue of promotion as a means of reward for faithful or exceptional service. Enclosing memorial of Dann, Kilmallock, [County Limerick], to Gosset, seeking issue of recompense on account of having supported Bridget Clarke, a crown witness, for a period of 38 days; stating she was seriously assaulted by James Nowlan of the 69th Regiment of Foot, who caused her to give premature birth to an infant child. Also memorial from Dann to Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley, Chief Secretary, calling for recognition and advancement on account of his exertions as a police constable; referring to his exertions in the constabulary during the troubled period of 1822-23 in County Limerick; also claiming to have suppressed the practice of turning up the Abbey lands of Kilmallock by bringing forward a crown witness who prosecuted seven men for the offence. |
