Letter from George Harrison, Treasury Chambers, London, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reflecting on a claim from Charles Coote over his loss of post with the Customs House in Dublin; he insists the lords ‘cannot comply with his request to be allowed a Gratuity of three years Pay’ but are prepared to allow appointment to a post ‘not inferior’ to that lost. Enclosing copy memorial from Coote, late clerk, Customs Office, 88 Baggot Street, Dublin, to the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury, requesting appointment to a post of equal remuneration to that previously held by him or compensation for the loss of office. Also encloses copy memorial from Coote to the Lords Commissioners stressing his entitlement to payment of compensation based on income for three years in the situation rather than the one year being offered. Also encloses copy letter from Richard B Deane, Henry Bouverie, John Williams and Frederick B Watson, Customs House, [London], relaying that Coote has received no gratuity for the loss of his position. File of material relating to disposal by Mathew Donelan of patent as collector of customs at the ports of Waterford and [New] Ross, County Wexford. Includes letter from Charles John A MacLean, secretary to the board of customs, Custom House, Dublin, to Donelan, 18 Rue Jacob, Fauxbourg [Faubourg], St Germain, Paris, France, conveying on behalf of the commissioner of customs that they will only accept a surrender of his patent on condition that the annuity paid to him has a deduction of £80 per year for payment of a deputy; also stipulates that it should incorporate a set payment of £15 per annum to Donelan to cover his losses on the civil list, 5 December 1823. Also includes letter from William Boothby, Glocester Wilson, William Thomas Roe and John Williams, commissioners of customs, Custom House, London, to the lords of the treasury, London, making evaluation of Donelan’s claim to payment of £602 11s 10d on surrender of his patent and stating they cannot recommend that he ‘be granted a larger allowance…than the net income of his office’, 21 April 1824. States his father, James Williams, served as baronial constable for a period of 30 years until retirement, and he continued after him for a space of about 10 years. Claims while on duty, he ‘lost the sight of one of his eyes’ and was deemed unfit for further service in the present police establishment. Refers to previous memorial for aid from government and states certificates in his favour can be acquired from local magistrates. |

Memorials of John Williams, Listowel, [County Kerry], to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, claiming that he has been unfairly dismissed from his position of sub constable at Tarbert, and requesting a trial before a group of magistrates; suggesting that his dismissal originated from the ‘malignity of some of the emissaries of Dan[ie]l O’Connell’. Also affidavit of Daniel Cronin and extract of the report of the Local Inspector of Kerry noting that Williams was accused by John O’Connell of exhibiting orange lilies outside his barracks while Constable Geoghegan of Ballylongford was similarly accused of placing green leaves on his military cap. Also covering letter from W Miller, Inspector General, Clonmel, [County Tipperary], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, stating that the police should be exempt from political bias or party feeling and recommending that this occasion be used to enforce this principle.
