SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Dr Edward Trevor, [supervisor of convict transportation, Cove, County Cork], Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, reporting that Ellen [apparently a mistake; her first name is Alice] Enright, a crown witness, is prepared to accept of clothing and Stg£20 rather that attempt a voyage with her 3 children on board a vessel bound for Jamaica, where her husband resides. Indicates her removal to that island was sanctioned by Mathew Barrington, crown solicitor [Munster circuit], but states due to her ‘character’ an objection might be lodged by the commander of the 77th regiment of foot, over her presence on the ship. Observes he found Enright, who had travelled with her family from Ballylongford, County Kerry, to Cove [Cobh], in a ‘very much distressed’ state, and conveys on his instructions an allowance is being paid her of 10 shillings a week. Also memorial from Alice Enright, Ballylongford, to Trevor, seeking assistance with removal overseas. States she is the widow of Daniel Enright, corporal, and complains of local harassment and death threats against herself and family. With various annotations on base, one of which states the Lord Lieutenant cannot provide further financial aid.

Petition of Austin Downes, Kilrush, County Clare, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting intervention with Richard McGillicuddy of Whitefield, late sheriff of County Kerry, to cancel the execution of a green wax process against him for the sum of Stg£5. Explains the demand arose from his failure to appear to prosecute Michael Turpin of Ballylongford, County Kerry, on whom he gave information in 1819 over the sale of 3 allegedly stolen books. Claims he had no notice of the apprehension and trial of Turpin and laments the levy will reduce him and his large family to ‘Beggary’. Appends to base copy affidavit confirming the authenticity of his petition, signed by R Barry and Jonas Studdert, magistrates for County Clare.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of James Harding, formally governor of the castle of Listowel, Gunsborough, near Ballylongford, County Kerry, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, acknowledging receipt of sum of £3 from government and seeking a further advance of £6 to buy linen thread to sustain himself and family. Provides an extended account of past misfortunes, in particular, the means under which he was ‘illegally dispossessed’ of the castle by John Church, magistrate of Listowel, and also subjected to cruel treatment at the hands of Sir Vere Hunt, who had him confined for a period of 18 months. Claims on account of his loss and mistreatment, he was granted compensation of £800 plus £20 per year for life by John Jeffreys Pratt, 1st Marquis Camden, but was deprived of all through ‘the influence of interest’. Complains he lost his house and garden and has no where to work his looms. Repeats claim to compensation for past losses and asks for reinstatement to Listowel Castle.
