Includes letter from William Hickie and Francis Crosbie, magistrates, Ballylongford, [County Kerry], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, complaining over the conduct of fellow magistrate, Julian, whom they allege acted illegally in bringing for trial the persons of Patrick McElligott and Ellen Enright on a charge of robbing a publican named Edmond McElligott of the town of Ballylongford; stating that Julian had the suspects rearrested, following a previous hearing, but refused to share information at the petty sessions of Ballylongford; adding that Julian subsequently issued summons to various local persons to appear at Tarbert petty sessions, but these summons were signed by himself only; noting that a private investigation was then held in Listowel, but the outcome remains unknown to them. Memorial of Timothy Sullivan, farmer, Lisloughten, [Lislaughtin], Ballylongford, County Kerry, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, complaining over the outcome of a case involving himself and two of his sons presided over by the magistrates at the petty sessions of Ballylongford and seeking a retrial at either Tarbert or Listowel; explaining that a charge was brought against himself and sons by Thomas Scanlan and James Scanlan, labourers, for an alleged ‘Assault & Battery’ in connection with an attempted recovery of potatoes that had previously been distrained for rent and arrears of rent; lamenting that the magistrates of Ballylongford failed to give a fair hearing or offer justice, as in the incident in question, Thomas and James Scanlan were the aggressors; with annotation on reverse giving legal opinion of Richard W Greene.

Includes letter from [Henry] Brownrigg, Chief Constable, Mallow, [County Cork], to Miller, reporting on the death of a man named Michael Ryan following a very severe beating outside the town of Kilmallock in County Limerick, where [horse] racing was being held; observing that Ryan, a native of Charleville, County Cork, was attacked outside the town following a fight between the inhabitants of Kilmallock and the country people. Also includes copy of a threatening notice posted in the town of Ballylongford in County Kerry; written by the ‘Darling Boy from Ennis [County Clare]’, it warns tyrants not to demand more ‘than ten shillings a peck for their Potatoes’ and ordering the people ‘to rear no more calves in this County’ or face annihilation. Also includes copy of handbill addressed to the Catholic inhabitants of the town of Dungarvan in County Waterford; encouraging members of the local community to attend at Easter vestries in order to oppose monetary taxes by the ‘Bloated and overgrown Church Establishment’ who seek to ‘wring from the Pockets of a famishing poor their last farthing for the decoration of a Church which they never enter and from which they derive no Benefit’.

Includes letter from [Benjamin] Jackson, Chief Constable, Listowel, County Kerry, to Miller, reporting on the activities of a mob of disaffected persons in the village of Ballylongford who called for the inhabitants to provide illuminations; remarking the mob smashed the windows of those who refused to comply and later turned their wrath against the police barracks and the men inside; adding that charges were raised against the ringleaders at Tarbert petty sessions; also reporting on a procession of near ‘fifty men decorated with Green Sashes and Cockades’ who marched between Ballylongford and Tarbert, ‘in regular military style with music’. Also includes letter from JB Kittson, Chief Constable, Nenagh, [County Tipperary], to Miller, reporting on a serious altercation at the fair of Toomavara, between two factions who ‘did not cease fighting for about two Hours’; remarking the combatants refused to listen to the parish priest or his curate and a number of those involved received superficial cuts from ‘blows of sticks’; also reporting that a man named Patrick Cusker was attacked outside the town and now appears unlikely to survive; adding that ground turned up by the Terry Alts in the district around Doohara has now been restored by the peasantry.
