File of letters relating to request by Maj Daniel Mahony, [Dunloe Castle], Killarney, [County Kerry], requesting that his son, a policeman, be transferred from Eyrescourt, County Galway, to Killarney. Includes letters from: policeman Stephen Burns [later referred to as Burke], Bantry, [County Cork], to Chief Constable Robert Blake, Killarney, stating that he is happy to transfer his station; Maj Mahony to [Lt Col] Meyrick Shawe, [Private Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant], Dublin Castle, enclosing letter he received from [Sir] Richard [Henry] Willcocks, Inspector General of Police [in Munster], Palmerston [House, Dublin], stating that he has no objection to the proposed exchange; Daniel Mahony Jr to William Gregory, Under Secretary, asking him to sanction the exchange, stating that it will bring him ‘more within the reach of my family which from my Father’s advanced period of life and a late melancholy event in my family is become an object of some moment to me’; Blake to Gregory, expressing a wish to transfer to Eyrescourt; and Willcocks to Gregory, outlining his objections to moving Mahony Jr to Killarney – as he would be too near his family, he would prefer that he move to Bantry, but Burke [?Burns] in Bantry will only move if he gets to Killarney, and Blake in Killarney will only move if he gets to Eyrescourt, which Willcocks also objects to. Additional letter from Shawe to Gregory, stating that there is no other solution than Mahony Jr postponing his transfer until a more suitable exchange can be found. [See also CSO/RP/1827/1167]. |

Letter from Richard Griffith, civil engineer, Cork, to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, in response to his enquiry if the road from Kenmare to Bantry referred to in the enclosed letter from J O’Driscoll, Passage West, to unknown recipient, has been recommended to commence at the expense of the public. Griffith informs him that work has not yet commenced on the road, and that he has previously recommended that the cost should be borne by the counties of Cork and Kerry. States the estimated cost of the road is about £8000, and approximately 17 miles long. |
