File of documents arising from an application from the fishermen of Bantry in County Cork for an extension of time to meet arrears owing to the Irish Fishery Board |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
File of documents arising from an application from the fishermen of Bantry in County Cork for an extension of time to meet arrears owing to the Irish Fishery Board. Includes petition of the fishermen of Bantry district, County Cork, to Earl Grey [Charles Grey, 2nd earl Grey], first lord of the treasury, London, [England], requesting an extension of the period in which loans must be repaid to the Irish Fishery Board; complaining the collector, [George] Woodhouse, has threatened law proceedings for recovery of loans and is actively seeking arrears; claiming that the years 1829 and 1830 were especially problematic for the fishing trade of Ireland, with a poor catch being compounded by the high price of provisions: with short certificate below signed by Lord Bantry [Richard White, 1st Earl of Bantry], and countersigned on base by three other fishermen. Also includes letter from John Armit, Henry R Paine, John Radcliff and Richard Cane, [Directors General of Inland Navigation], Navigation Office, [Dublin], to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, reporting on the application of the fishermen of Bantry district; observing that a communication was made with Woodhouse and he gave opinion that the men would be better able to meet the loan repayments at the end of the year but ‘they cannot be depended to do so’ without recourse to legal proceedings and warning there are ‘some ill disposed, scheming Characters amongst them’ whose nefarious influence affects the whole; concluding that reasonable repayment terms have been offered and the collector has been authorised to proceed against any person or persons who are refusing to settle their debt, but adjudged fit to pay.
