Letter from Robert Shapland Carew junior, Woodstown, County Waterford, MP for County Wexford, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, on behalf of land owners in barony of Bantry, County Wexford, respecting their concern at an advertisement in the newspapers for the letting of Bantry Commons, 18 September 1821. States that 'All the Fuel consumed in that part of the County is procured from the Commons, & has been so from Time immemorial, & all the Neighbouring Land Owners send their Cattle to graze there'. Encloses letter from William Blacker and John Richards, Waterford, land owners in the area, to Grant, on the crown's plans to lease the commons at Bantry, 'alleged to be Crown Lands', 18 September 1821. Also letter from William Saurin, Attorney General of Ireland, Flood Hall, County Kilkenny, to Grant, stating, as requested, his opinion on subject, 21 September 1821.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from John Jagoe, Bantry, County Cork, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning education, and commenting that 'it is well known that religious party feeling is the greatest barrier to education in Ireland….'. Emphasises that until a system of education 'free from the doctrines of any particular religious sect', is established, education cannot flourish. States that money currently spent by government on education in Ireland is misapplied, 25 March 1821. Also letter from Jagoe to Grant, requesting Grant's support in obtaining a sum of money from the consolidated fund to build a store for use of the fishery, 20 April 1821. SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from John Clarke, Bantry, County Cork, former post master of Bantry, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, referring to the case against him concerning a sum of money which he omitted to give credit for in his monthly vouchers. Requests to know if he will be acquitted, under the act of grace, following the coronation of King George IV, 17 September. Also letter from Thomas Orde Lees, chief clerk, on behalf of Sir Edward Smith Lees, secretary to Irish Post Masters General, to Grant, responding, as requested, to Grant's query, concerning the case. States that as Clarke's crime is a capital felony, the Post Masters General do not believe that the act of grace will extend to his case, 25 September 1821.

2 reports by John Killaly and Alexander Nimmo, Dublin, engineers appointed under Public Works Loans (Ireland) Act 1820 1 Geo IV chapter 81, approving plans for proposed new road between Glengariff and Castletown Beerhaven [Bearhaven], County Cork, 22 September; 6 December 1821. Refers to petition received on the subject, from Richard White, 1st earl of Bantry. Also petition [referred to in engineers' report] from landed proprietors of County Cork, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting government funds to construct a road to link the area of County Cork to the north of Bantry, with the rest of the county. Emphasises that it is currently cut off from the benefits of trade and markets. Petition signed by 29 individuals, including Earl of Bantry and several magistrates, [September 1821].

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of Richard Clarke, Bantry, County Cork, formerly ordnance [commissariat] storekeeper at Bantry, to King George IV, requesting a government allowance for his former services. Refers to his loyalty and his efforts on behalf of the crown when the French fleet attempted to land in Bantry Bay [in 1796]. States that his post as storekeeper was discontinued in 1816 with the establishment of peace, without any compensation being granted, 16 August 1821. Also letter from Clarke, Bantry, to Reverend John C Talbot, private secretary to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting Talbot's support for his case, and also requesting appointment to a government post, 1 December 1821. Encloses copy of letter from Thomas Venables, at Dublin Castle, private secretary to Henry Addington, 1st viscount Sidmouth, Secretary of State for the Home Department, to Clarke, informing him that his case has been referred to the Irish government, 31 August 1821.
