SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from William Kemmis, Kildare Street, Dublin, crown solicitor, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, requesting that application be made to the Church of Ireland bishop of Derry [William Knox] to forward the diocesan visitation and vestry books of that place, in order that a search may be made of the contents and abstracts taken. Such a course of action is essential, he asserts, to obtain information for a legal defence of the bishop and the dean of Derry, Reverend Thomas Bunbury Gough, who are being proceeded against by the London Society over the church living of Templemore, County Londonderry, 18 April 1825. Also letter from Gough to Gregory, acknowledges request for despatch of diocesan records to the crown solicitor. States until the bishop returns to Londonderry, he will not be in a position to comply. Asks that a copy of the Kemmis’ letter be sent on, since a copy referred to as enclosed was by oversight not sent, 22 April 1825. Also second letter from Gough to Gregory, emphasising his resolve to offer every assistance to the crown solicitor in his defence of crown patronage ‘against the attacks of the Irish Society’, 29 April 1825.
