Includes petition of the ‘aggrieved Tenantry’ on the estate of William Locke, parish of Duagh, Listowel, [County Kerry], to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, complaining at the behaviour of their ‘Scotch Agent’ [Murray] and seeking the interference of government; lamenting that Murray is aggressively forcing them off their holdings by means of ‘rack rent’, oppression and legal eviction; alleging the agent is making use of ‘false swearing and Bribery’ to deprive them of their holdings and claiming in excess of 60 families have now been expelled off the land; signed and marked by five persons. Also includes letter from [Benjamin] Jackson, Chief Constable, Listowel, [County Kerry], to [Cap] Matthew Singleton, Sub-inspector, Portumna, [County Galway], acknowledging the oppressive conduct of Murray, who also acts as a local magistrate; remarking that Murray seeks to expel many of the tenants on Locke’s estate and place their lands in the hands of middlemen; reciting a few cases of eviction and noting as an example that Murray put John Connor off his holding, despite being a regular rent payer and industrious tenant who build his own slated dwelling.
