File of material relating to escape of convicts from Depot in Cork, County Cork. Includes letter from Dr Edward Trevor, Passage East, Waterford, County Waterford, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, indicating surprise that ‘the Convicts could have made so formidable an attack…the impression on my mind at present is that relaxation of duty on either side must have existed’; encloses copy letter from Francis Davies Murphy, keeper of convict depot, with full account of the prison break, during which a soldier and two convicts were killed, 14 August 1820; also includes letter from Reverend Alexander Kennedy, inspector of the convict depot at Cork, to Gregory, with full report of the incident of which he observes ‘From a careful personal investigation I cannot find any Blame or Negligence to attach to Mr Murphy whose conduct has been so highly exemplary as to merit my most unqualified approbation or to any person employed by him’, 12 August 1820.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

File of material containing letters and reports to government from Dr Edward Trevor on the question of transportation of convicts, compiled mainly from his base at Cove of Cork, County Cork, and Passage East, near Waterford, County Waterford. Includes letter from Trevor, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, conveying that ships carrying English female convicts can be supplied with fresh provisions at Cove of Cork, provided that advance notification from England is given: also refers to discussion over issue of supply, and observes ‘that the circumstances complained of in my opinion arose from the disappointment of some persons not having opportunities to make exorbitant charges as was formally practiced and from others looking to be employed’, 11 January 1820; also includes letter from Trevor to Gregory reporting that the ship Atlas arrived at Cove, with all convicts in a good state of health except one ‘who is feverish’, that he has boarded one hundred prisoners to the ship Dorothy, which he would like to see sail without further delay in waiting for convicts from counties Galway and Roscommon, 24 April 1820; also includes letter from Trevor to Gregory recommending that female convicts, Honor Carr of County Longford, and Ester Walsh of County Dublin, who are in Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin, be transferred to Richmond General Penitentiary: also discusses the case of prisoner Catherine McMullen of County Antrim, who ‘has a child at her breast, and another Child about five years old’, June 1820; also includes letter from Trevor, to Gregory, reporting that it has been necessary to remove two prisoners on health grounds from ship Atlas to the Gaol of Waterford, that he has taken steps ‘likely to conduce to the Cleanliness and health of the Prisoners’ under his charge, that he investigated a complaint from some convicts ‘that they were Obliged on the Passage from Dublin to give their Shoes for Water’, also that he ‘discharged one of the stewards (McMenamy)] brought from Dublin for improper Conduct such as likely to cause discontent among the Guard’, 15 August 1820; also includes letter from Trevor, to Gregory, indicating that he has been engaged in transfer of convicts to the ship Almorah but discovered ‘one Prisoner missing, and received private information that he was concealed under the Ballast of one of the Dublin ships, to which place I went and found the fellow so Concealed’, 13 August 1820; also includes letter from Trevor, to Francis Davies Murphy, Keeper, Convict Depot, Cork, outlining a series of new security measures ‘in consequence of the late escape’ from the depot at Cork, 8 September 1820.

Also letters from [Lord] George Beresford, Curraghmore, [County Waterford], to Gregory, requesting that Chief Constable Healy stationed at Tramore, Croker stationed at Dungarvan and Sub-constable Healy be moved out of the county; claiming that [Richard] Willcocks ‘never troubles himself about the establishment in our county’; requesting the removal of Mr Allen, tidewaiter at Passage East, who is a most active agent employed in reducing Lord Waterford’s tenants; enclosing letter from R Uniacke and requesting government intervention to put down shameful outrages and recommending that the military be stationed in Kilmacthomas.
