Copy of ‘Report on the Southern District in Ireland, containing a Statement of the progress made during the year 1823, on the several Roads carried on at the public expense in that District under the Orders of His Excellency, the Lord Lieutenant’, compiled by Richard Griffiths, civil engineer, for the attention of Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle. Discusses progress of public works in counties Limerick, Cork and Kerry, carried on ostensively between the rivers Shannon and Blackwater, in particular the new lines of communication between Listowel and Newmarket, Castleisland and Newcastle, Newmarket and Charleville, Macroom and Glenflesk, Skibbereen to Crookhaven harbour, Clonakilty to Ring harbour, Timoleague to Courtmacsherry, and Bantry to Skibbereen; also comments on some roads proposed for attention, a line from Newmarket through the Bogra Mountains, and a road from Bantry Bay to the Kenmare river over a mountain ridge. Remarks on particular mode adopted to increase productivity in labour among lower classes, the reduction in outrages in region, and reflects on the beneficial aspects of the work for the wider economy and society; includes full cost breakdown of southern road construction schemes under heading ‘General Statement of Public Accounts for 1823. |
