File of documents concerning an investigation into the conduct of Michael Cormick, coroner of Thurles, County Tipperary, who is accused of showing impartiality towards the police on the occasion of an inquest on the body of Catherine Maher. Includes affidavit of Cormick, outlining his behaviour at the inquest on the body of Maher which was held between the 6th and 11th of October, and insisting he is not guilty of professional misconduct; stressing his attention to the proper empanelling of a jury and insisting he asked the jury to return a verdict, which they did indicating that Maher ‘came by her death by a Gun shot wound inflicted by one of twenty nine policemen executing a magistrate’s warrant on the Lands of Leigh’ in County Tipperary; sworn before John Tudor, magistrate of the Head Office of Police, Dublin. Also enclosing copy letter from Miller to Grant, proposing a set of guidelines for helping the police deal with mob disorder. Also enclosing letter from Fr Michael Slattery, parish priest of Burrisoleigh, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, complaining of the disruptive results of faction clashes between the ‘Pallets’ and ’Bawns’ and seeking the protection of the legal authorities; lamenting at the failure of the local police to interfere to suppress the fighting and suggesting they be vested with greater powers. |
