File of documents arising from the occurrence of a riot in the village of Clough in County Down amongst the Presbyterians living in that quarter. Includes letter from William Frederick Ebhardt, Chief Constable, Ballynahinch, [County Down], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, reporting on ‘a most serious and savage Riot’ in Clough on Sunday 1st of May over the possession of the local Presbyterian meeting house; stating his small party of police were supported by a company of the 64th Regiment and in process of the dispute the Riot Act was read; requesting that government take action immediately before the occurrence of a ‘General massacre of Persons’ next Sunday. Also includes letter from Clifford Trotter, [magistrate, Farranfad, County Down], Gresham's Hotel, Sackville [O'Connell] Street, Dublin, to Gosset, stating that those chiefly responsible for the riot on the 1st of May came from outside the area and could not be identified; alluding to the past difficulty placed before the magistrates at Seaford due to the ‘excitement’ generated by the disagreement and asking if some arrangement could be made in respect of payment of the regium donum to defuse the situation.
