Letter from Reverend Thomas Millar, concerning vacant post of regium donum agent for Seceding Presbyterian Synod |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from Reverend Thomas Millar, Cookstown, County Tyrone, moderator of the Presbyterian Seceding Synod, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the vacant post of regium donum agent for the ministers of the Seceding Synod. States that he has already written in his official capacity of moderator of the synod, but now writes as a private individual. Emphasises his decided opinion that, 'no minister of the synod should be appointed' to the post of regium donum agent. Details his reasons for that opinion, and notes that a minister holding such a post posses 'a preponderating influence over his brethren'. Instead, he urges the appointment of a Seceding layman and recommends the brothers John and William Weir to jointly hold the post.
