TITLE: |
File of papers relating to changes resulting from new act of parliament relating to diocesan and district schools in Ireland |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
File of papers relating to changes resulting from new act of parliament relating to diocesan and district schools in Ireland. File includes petition of Reverend George Irwin, Longford, County Longford, diocesan school master of Ardagh, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, concerning the plans of the Board of Education to unite the free schools of the diocese of Meath and the diocese of Ardagh, thus depriving Irwin of his only livelihood, 28 August 1823. File also includes petition of the clergy and gentry of the diocese of Ross, to Wellesley, expressing concern about the fate of the diocesan school in the town of Rosscarbery, noting that the school has had no master since the resignation of Reverend George Armstrong, and referring to reports that the Board of Education intend to close it and unite it with the diocesan school of Cork. The petition also recommends the appointment of James White as a proper successor to Armstrong; petition signed by 17 individuals, including George King, 3rd earl of Kingston, and John Evans-Freke, 6th baron Carbery, 24 September 1823. File also includes petition of James White, Rosscarbery, to Wellesley, referring to former notification of his appointment to the post of diocesan school master of Ross, and emphasising that he 'would not have ventured to undertake the Duties of a Schoolmaster in the Town of Ross, without the assurance of receiving the Diocesan salary'; expresses concern that his appointment may be withdrawn in the event of the school's amalgamation with Cork, 24 September 1823. File also includes a letter from James Irwin, Raphoe, County Donegal, master of Raphoe school, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the insubordination of the tenantry on the school's lands; emphasises the prevalence of illicit distillation, their refusal to pay rents; and their resistance to all laws. Suggests the necessity of stationing a party of revenue police on the school lands, 15 September 1823. File also includes letter from Chamberlen William Walker, Board of Education, Dublin, secretary to the commissioners of education, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, 28 October 1823, enclosing statement from the commissioners, to Goulburn, in reply to Goulburn's letter, concerning the above petitions, and also referring to a petition from Reverend Joseph Jameson, seeking appointment to the district school of Ossory and Leighlin, 27 October 1823.
