Petition of Mary Callan, widow, Dublin, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting financial aid. States that her husband, Patrick Callan, while attending to his duties as steward of the House of Industry, contracted and died from fever; as a widow ‘in advanced state of pregnancy’ with four children to care for, she appeals for assistance. It was through her husband’s responsibilities in the preparation of the ‘Richmond General Penitentiary [Dublin] for the reception of patients in Fever’, that he contracted the disease; memorial is signed by governors and physicians of House of Industry.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Robert Perceval, Roderick Connor, Thomas Crosthwait and Henry Cole, visitors, House of Industry, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, recommending an application for financial augmentation from Mary Callan, matron of 3 general hospitals of the House of Industry, to the ‘favourable consideration’ of government. Observes having lost her husband, she has a family of 4 [5 in total] children to support. Annotation from CSO on back rules as her remuneration is ‘adequate’ it is not in the power of government to offer any further assistance. Also memorial from Callan to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, complaining of financial difficulties of supporting her family and seeking redress. Claims to have laboured for 16 years past in her ‘dangerous’ post as matron and recounts the death of her husband, Patrick Callan, steward and providore at the House of Industry, from fever in March 1818. Memorial signed by Lieutenant Colonel George Morris, governor, House of Industry, and 11 others, mainly of the medical profession.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of Leonard Callan, House of Industry, Dublin, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting a measure of assistance to aid his restoration to good health. Recalls his deceased father, Patrick Callan, was employed as steward and providore at the institution for a considerable time but finally lost his life in June 1818 having served the public during the period of fever in the city, 1817 to 1818. Remarks his mother has made every effort to provide a medical education for him but her means are unable to stretch sufficiently having a number of children to care for. Also certificate from Hugh Ferguson, medical doctor, House of Industry, observing that Callan appears to be suffering from ‘pulmonary consumption’ and will require particular care and attention to make a full recovery.

File of correspondence regarding the dismissal of Constable George McCormick and sub-constable Andrew Moorhead, and the disciplining of sub-constables Thomas Clarke [also Clearken], and John Irwin, Enniskeen [Iniskeen], County Monaghan for drunkenness and for damaging the property of JB Kernan, magistrate. Includes correspondence from William Daniel, magistrate and chairman, Carrickmacross, [County Monaghan], Maj Thomas D’Arcy, Inspector General [for Ulster], Holly Hill, Strabane, [County Tyrone], a petition from McCormick, Moorhead, Clarke, and Irwin, to Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke Northumberland, [Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Dublin], and separately from McCormack who submits an affidavit by Clarke and Irwin, taken by Richard Mayne, magistrate; also referring to Mr Irwin, Chief Constable and Rev JB Sterling, William Filgate, [magistrate], for character references. Both petition and memorial ask for a new investigation; the former implies that Kernan had them prosecuted out of religious prejudice, being a Catholic.
